How about changing it to this.
Your customer buys something. You offer another similar product. Customer decides to buy the new product or not. You thank customer again for their business after everything is done. You send a postcard or email to customer a month later to remind them that he/she is important to you.
You already know that if you use the second approach, your sales will go up. What are you doing?.
