About Authentic Mud Cloth

These mudcloth pieces, which are made in Mali are "Lapa" size. Approx. 38" - 45" wide x 63" - 68" long. Sizes may vary as these are hand made. Traditional African mudcloth sheets are handwoven and made one at a time. No two pieces of mud cloth are exactly alike, so the colors shown are available, but the exact patterns vary from one piece to the next. They're great for clothing, home decoration, crafts and other creative pursuits. African artisans hand-dye symbols into these fabrics in order to tell stories of their villages and African proverbs. Mudcloth has a long tradition of being used by West African warriors and hunters to camouflage themselves. Nowadays, people across the globe are wearing them to stand out and celebrate their connection to the African continent. M-F050

Best to wash by hand.

All mudcloth is individually hand spun, hand woven, and hand painted. Each piece is different. Photos shown here are representative of colors only. Plain white pieces can vary in shade from bright white to off white. There is no guarantee on the shade you will receive.

I ordered four pieces of cloth and they were shipped very quickly. They are lovely and substantial in size… I’m not sure I realized how big each piece was going to be! Lots of beautiful fabric to make bags and such. The texture and hand is wonderful as well.. I’m going to have fun. And thank you for the soap.. it smells heavenly.

    Great selection of patterns

I have bought a number of pieces of mudcloth from Africa Imports and they are beautiful works of art at a great price. They have a strong odor when they arrive and it takes a month or two for the smell to go away. Since they are handmade with mud they are dirty. When I cut them there is a gritty dirt residue left on my cutting mat. There may also be dirt spots on the fabric if they have a white background but you can usually spot clean them with a mild detergent. Many of them need to be repaired at the seams which I do on my sewing machine with a wide zig zag stitch.

When I recieved my indigo mudcloth, I was blown away by how beautiful it was (don't get me wrong, the pictures on the website were stunning but to open my box and pull out the mud cloth and see it in person...I was blown away.) I almost don't want to give away the gift that I created out of the mud cloth, but that being said, it will give me a reason to buy another one. I also can't thank the staff at Africa Imports enough for their kind and courteous manner in helping me with the issue I ran into when trying to order my cloth. I will DEFINITELY be buying from them again!!

I have been using mudcloth …

I have been using mudcloth boubous and shirts for more than eight years. They wear very comfortably, and withstand multiple washing by hand. No problem. I just love mudcloth. I suspect you may love it too if you dare to try it.
