The name Samburu is a nickname which means "bag carrying luggage" this is very appropriate considering their lifestyle. The Samburu are a nomadic people group, very similar to the Massai people of Kenya. The Samburu live in Kenya in the Rift Valley Province, where they spend much of their time herding cattle and livestock. Their main substance is milk and any vegetables and natural products they can find. They dress in bright colored clothing with lots of beads, very similar to the Massai, and 5-10 families will live together and migrate from place to place in search of places to graze. Their society is based on nomadic herding and raiding other groups or defending their homes.
The Samburu place a high value on children, and many rituals and ceremonies are done to increase fertility; to be childless is a great disgrace.
The religion of the Samburu is very different then the animistic way of life surrounding them. They believe in god, who is everywhere and all powerful and then they also believe in an evil power. The only way that the Samburu can communicate with god is to talk through an invisible string, which runs from heaven to earth. Unfortunately this string was cut in the past because some Samburu's didn't think that god was answering their prayers.
