Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I wanted a way to share my art with the world. My advice to someone wanting to start a business similar to mine would be to be yourself, get comfortable with speaking to strangers and exhibit a positive friendly attitude. Present a product that is undeniably beautiful or useful and you should do great!

What’s your small business story?

Food is my passion and I’ve been cooking since I was 12 years old. I started Destiny 20 years ago as a food caterer specializing in African cuisine. In 2021, I opened my first physical store to provide the African and immigrant community with their native food and seasonings

I am so proud of my business because it’s breaking so many barriers for African food entrepreneurs and African culture. I am breaking barriers by expanding the catering business to include food and goods in a brick-and-mortar space during the pandemic. The opening of my first location is creating more accessibility to African foods. Customers have reported that they would have to ship what we offer from other states or outside the country!

What motivates you?

It’s not merely about making money but purposefully creating accessibility to African food. I know I’m doing something right when a customer is in tears because they've encountered African sugar they haven’t seen since childhood or tasted a food that reminded them of a loved one that passed on. This is the type of effect Destiny has on people and this is what motivates me.

In 2020, we added the goal of providing jobs for Transitional Aged Youth (those aging out of the Foster Care System). These youth need viable skills to take them into the future and provide them with jobs that can help them in future endeavors, both financially and professionally. Brownhaze Jewelry can be the "stepping stone" for these young people and open doors for their futures. As the world is opening back up, we plan to start providing jobs and training for these youth and your purchases will help us to realize these goals.

Since the world is beginning to open back up, we are able to conduct in-person vendor shows. A portion of the profits from these shows is allowing us to conduct job training and financial literacy training to foster youth. We have a long way to go, but we have to begin somewhere. Why did you start your business?

The reason I started my business is because my son was diagnosed with OHI Adhd with a BIP and I kept missing work from the hospital so instead of firing me they said take time off to deal with him so he was home school and I needed to make money to support my 3 boys single mother at that.
