How To Make Your Own Fragrance Oils

Want to create your own unique fragrance to stand out from the crowd? A great way to do this is by making your own fragrance oils that are as unique and as special as you. You can mix and match different scents and come up with a bespoke fragrance that you’re bound to love.

Why Use Fragrance Oils?

Unlike spray fragrance, fragrance oils give you a luxurious feeling on your skin. There is no alcohol in fragrance oils either, meaning they melt into the skin and don’t evaporate like liquid spray fragrances. One application of a fragrance oil lasts longer than spray fragrance for confidence that your unique aroma will be preserved throughout the day and into the evening hours.

No alcohol also makes fragrance oils a more natural product. Essential oils make up the overall fragrance oil, and essential oils are plant-derived, so there are no synthetic preservatives at all.

How Do You Make Your Own Fragrance Oils?

Some people worry that making your own fragrance is too complicated. We’re here to tell you that it isn’t – you don’t need to be a chemist in a laboratory to make your own fragrance oils.

You just need a bit of know-how and imagination and personal style. We’ll supply the know-how, and you can supply the imagination and style!

Learn About Your Ingredients

First up, you need to learn some things about the ingredients you’re going to use. Don’t worry – it isn’t too complicated. Basically, you just need to know that some essential oils can be overly sensitizing or irritating if used incorrectly. Unfortunately, not all natural ingredients are harmless. Always do some online searches about the ingredient before you use it.

Understand What Makes Up Scents

There are three parts of a fragrance oil – head, heart, and base. Headnotes are the first thing you notice in the fragrance. Heart notes are the dominant and most noticeable part of the aroma. Base notes are the longest lasting.

The most common headnotes are citrus scents for their potency and assertiveness. Light, sweet, and airy, florals are commonly used for heart notes. The most common base notes are woody scents for their long-lasting pungency.

Pick Your Essential Oils

This is the fun, creative part. This is the part where we can help you, too. We’ve got all the oils you need to make your perfect bespoke fragrance. When picking your essential oils, remember to stick to the head, heart, and base combinations that we just mentioned.

For head notes, you’ll most likely want to use fresh, crisp, and rejuvenating citrus scents. We’ve got a wide range of citrus scent essential oils on offer. Our Fresh Lemon oil is a bestseller for its high quality and classic scent. For a less common citrus aroma, we’ve also got a number of bergamot oils on offer.

Herbal scents, such as lavender and rosemary, are also popular. They’re slightly lighter than the citrus scents. A great combination of citrus and herbal scent is our Grapefruit and Rosemary oil, which is a consistent bestseller.

Heart notes are commonly floral scents, and you have the most options out of all the notes in this category. Some of our most popular floral oils are Eternal Roses, Golden Rose, Jasmine, and Iris. Ylang-ylang oil is an outside choice but can offer great results with its interesting and unique aromas that are reminiscent of custard and bananas.

For base notes, you can choose woody or musky scents. Frankincense and Black Butter oils are popular choices for the woody scent. Our recommendation is our own bestselling Birchwood Pine oil, for a fresh, natural, and long-lasting aroma.

You might not be too familiar with musky scents. Most people link them with animal musk, but there is botanical musk as well. Botanical musk is really growing in popularity. Our recommendation is another one of our bestselling products –Sandalwood oil. The dark, earthy, and smoky Sandalwood Egyptian oil is traditionally used as a men’s fragrance, but it’s also used in small quantities in lots of women’s fragrances.

Get The Materials To Make Your Fragrance Oils

Once you’ve chosen which combination of oils you want to use, it’s time to gather the right materials to make your fragrance oil.

You need:

Start Mixing The Oils

To make one batch of fragrance oil, you’ll need to use your dropper or pipette to put 80 drops of your chosen carrier oil into the mix, along with 20 drops of your chosen essential oils. We recommend using 5 drops for the head and heart notes and 10 drops for the base notes.

When mixing, don’t use more than 20% concentration (20 drops out of 80 drops) of essential oils in your carrier oil. Seal the bottle once you’ve done this and shake well. Don’t forget to record the exact details of your recipe to make sure you can recreate it.

How To Use Your New Fragrance Oil

If you are not familiar with applying fragrance oils, we recommend you either spray or roll the bottle behind your ears, on your neck, and on your chest. A mistake a lot of people make is applying fragrance to the wrists – there is a lot of blood flow on the wrists, which makes the scent evaporate more quickly.

Summary

Making your own fragrance oils allows you to mix together all your favorite scents into one unique fragrance. It’s a fun, creative, and rewarding hobby that is gaining popularity.

The mixing possibilities are endless, meaning you can be sure that no one else is wearing a fragrance quite like yours. For a lot of people, it’s about forging a sense of identity. When people smell your unique fragrance, they will have no doubt who is in their presence.
