How To Make Your Own Perfume - A Step-By-Step Process

Step 1 - The first step is choosing which fragrance oil you want. Africa Imports offers a huge range of fragrance oils to choose from. You can find incredibly affordable fragrance oils that match all your favourite fragrances and scents, you’ll find everything from Versace Eros to Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. These can be purchased at a one-off price or at a wholesale price for larger quantities depending on how much perfume you plan on making.

Choosing the right fragrance is important. Each fragrance will give off different notes. There are many different notes to take into consideration when you choose to make your own perfume. Some of the most popular notes include:

Amber – Amber notes generally create a sweet, warm scent but can also be used to bring together a more sexually scented fragrance. Amber can help to add some depth to a fragrance and usually consists of ingredients such as benzoin, vanilla, patchouli just to name a few.

Musk – The musk note is part of the Terrestrial family and is normally used as a base note. Musk often smells quite woody or earthy and is very distinguishable and lasting lingering scent.

Vanilla – Vanilla is an incredibly recognisable note to many, offering a sweet and comforting fragrance. It belongs to the oriental family and is commonly used as a base note.

Bergamot – Belonging to the citrus family of notes, Bergamot offers a fresh, fruity and sensational scent and goes well in any summer or spring scent.

Jasmine – A wonderful heart or middle note, Jasmine belongs to the olive tree family. It is sweet and delightful and offers an exquisite floral scent.

Sandalwood – Part of the oriental family, sandalwood is commonly used to create woody and warm base notes such as cedar. It is commonly used in men’s fragrances.

Mandarin – Mandarin belongs to the citrus family, and offers sweet and fruity scents. A tasteful top note, mandarin is perfect for fresh and light smelling scents.

Patchouli – Primarily used as a base note thanks to its musky and spicy aroma, Patchouli belongs to the mint family.

Rose – Offering an incredibly sweet, yet spicy scent, Rose is commonly used as a base note for sweeter smelling fragrances.

Lemon – Zingy, zesty and fruity, Lemon belongs to the citrus family and makes for excellent floral blends of perfume.

Cedarwood – Offering vibrant earthy, woody and musky scent. It belongs to the cypress family and is normally used as a woody base note.

Vetiver – Woody and earthy, Vetiver is part of the woody fragrance family and used as a base note for many musky fragrances.

Step 2 – Gather Everything You Need

In order to make perfume by yourself, you will need to pick up a few items Many of the items can be found at a more than reasonable price in most common stores. Do note that you will need to be over the age of 21 to purchase the alcohol.

  • -Your chosen fragrance oil from Africa Imports.
  • -A spray bottle.
  • -A measuring device such as a pipette.
  • -Preferably denatured alcohol, however this can be hard to find and usually is quite expensive. Everclear can be found in most liquor stores.

Step 3 – The Mixing Process

In this step, you will mix your fragrance oil with your alcohol. To do this, you will measure enough fragrance oil with your pipette to fill roughly one fifth to one quarter of the spray bottle. You can add less than this or more if you wish depending on how strong you want your perfume to smell. For a 1/3 Oz bottle, this will equate to 2ml.

You will then want to fill the rest of the spray bottle with your alcohol. Put the lid on and shake the spray bottle well to ensure that the alcohol mixes well with your chosen fragrance oil.

Step 4 – Let Your Perfume Age

The final step to the process is to let your now mixed perfume age for 1-3 weeks depending on how consistent you want your perfume to be. The perfume can immediately be used if you wish, however we recommend letting the perfume properly develop which can take a few weeks. This lets the alcohol and the fragrance oil blend together well, ensuring a strong and consistent smelling perfume.
