The Yoruba people have a saying about the shekere, a traditional West African instrument. They believe that the shekere carries contagious joy, bringing merriment to everyone who hears it. Yoruba slaves brought this joy-maker to Cuba and from there its use has spread to Latin America and the rest of the world. Our Ghanaian shekeres are made from hollowed gourds and beads. One set of beads is inside the gourd; the other set is on netting that wraps around the outside. Twisting, slapping and shaking the shekere produces a subtle rattle which can be varied in many ways. We carry small, medium, and large shekeres. The large size is 14-16" long. Made in Ghana
