Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nuts of the shea tree. It is solid at warm temperatures and has an off-white or ivory color. Its creamy consistency is easy to spread on your skin. Shea trees are native to West Africa, that’s why most of the shea butter still comes from that region.

It is a common cosmetic ingredient for centuries. It has a high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids. Shea butter also has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. It makes a great product for smoothing, soothing, and conditioning your skin. Using it on your skin, especially on your face will improve its texture.

Make Your Own Natural Shea Butter Lotion

There are unlimited combinations that you can use to make your own shea butter lotion. These are some general instruction ideas. But you can change this around to create your own special blends.

What you'll need:

  • 1 lb. or 80% of unrefined shea butter

  • 3 oz. or 19% grape seed oil, virgin coconut oil, neem oil. shea nut oil, or a combination of these or other natural oils.

  • 1 oz. or 1% of vitamin E oil

  • Fragrance oil

Put all your ingredients together except for the fragrance oil. Heat in a microwave or hot water bath until softened. (Make sure not to melt the ingredients, when heating in a microwave try 20-second intervals.) When soft mix with a blender starting low speed and then higher until whipped. As the shea butter is whipped, it may turn a green color. When whipped completely will look light and creamy. Add the fragrance oil and mix by hand for a few minutes and then blend to completely mix in the fragrance.

Adding Fragrance to Your Shea Butter

ITEMS NEEDED:

Shea Butter

  • M-176 25 lb case of white shea butter

  • M-177 25 lb case of yellow shea butter

One of the following fragrance options:

  • 1.6 oz. Fragrance Oil OR

  • 0.7 oz. Essential Oil

Heat 5 lbs of shea butter in a double boiler until melted. You don't want to heat the butter any more than necessary to melt it. If you don't have a double boiler, then you can put your shea butter in a pan. Place that pan in another pan that is half full of hot water. Make sure the hot water doesn't get into the pan containing the shea butter. Add the fragrance or essential oil and mix it into the shea butter until mixed. After mixing if the fragrance is not as strong as you would like then you can add up to an extra 1.6 oz. of fragrance oil if using fragrance oils or 0.7 oz. of essential oils if using essential oils.

Keep in mind that higher levels of fragrance might be irritating to some people’s skin. Also, note that the fragrance will be much stronger. While the shea butter is warm and will become less strong as the shea butter cools. A single batch yields approximately 20 4 oz. container.

Essential oils are steam-distilled fragrances that are 100% pure. They have strong therapeutic properties. Have you ever smelled eucalyptus when you have a cold to relieve your congestion? How about peppermint as a deodorant? Some of these methods are practiced around the world, others are not used much here in the US. But the benefits have been proven again and again.

To come up with your own healing blend, choose the essential oils. They are good for different emotions:

  • ANGER: Sweet Orange

  • ANXIETY: Frankincense, Lavender

  • DEPRESSION: Lavender, Sweet Orange, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus

  • IRRITABILITY: Lavender

  • STRESS: Lavender

  • COUGHS/COLD/BRONCHITIS: Eucalyptus

  • MUSCULAR ACHES AND PAINS: Lemongrass, Eucalyptus

  • INDIGESTION/STOMACH ACHE: Lemongrass

Because essential oils are derived from plants, it does not mean they are safe to use. After handling essential oils, it is “essential” to wash one’s hands with warm water and soap. Avoid touching your eyes or putting your fingers in your mouth.

Because essential oils are so concentrated, it is usually necessary to dilute them. You can do it with a neutral carrier oil, such as jojoba, or shea butter to avoid irritating the skin.

Body Butter Recipes Using Shea Butter

You can make your body butter and other products more personalized in different ways. The most common way is to add a little bit of oil to ad a unique or personalized fragrance to your butter. 1% to 2 % of fragrance is what you will want. Different oils are stronger than others. So, a few drops of a very powerful fragrance may make your butter stronger smelling.

You can also add other things to your butter. Some people will melt shea butter to add to another butter to give it more healing properties. This is not a good idea. Shea butter solidifies at room temperature. Unless something else is added to the lotion to keep the shea butter in suspension, you could end up with small chunks of shea butter in the lotion.

There are more instructions and mixtures that you can find online. You will be happiest creating your own blends with a little practice.
