How to use essential oils to deodorize your carpet

Last week two rooms in our house flooded. There was about two inches of water on the floor and we spent days trying to get it out and dry everything up. Unfortunately, when your carpet gets wet from flooding it often leads to molding and a musty smell. Even after drying everything off and making sure all the water was soaked out of the carpet, things just didn't smell right.

What We Did About The Smelly Carpet

We went to the store and bought a bunch of baking soda. We mixed two containers of baking soda with about 20 drops of lemongrass essential oil. We had to use a fork to mix it up so that it wasn't clumpy. We then vacuumed the area before applying the baking soda/lemongrass solution, sprinkling it generously all over our carpet. It smelled A-MAZING! Our whole house, which just moments before had smelled musty and moldy, now smelled like freshly-squeezed lemons. It was such a relief! We left the baking soda/lemongrass combination on the carpet overnight and then vacuumed it up. Bad smell gone!

What Makes Lemongrass and Baking Soda So Great for Deodorizing Carpet?

Baking soda literally sucks up the odors out of the carpet - it doesn't just cover a smell. Lemongrass replaces that bad odor with a fresh smell. Lemongrass is also antibacterial and antifungal, and it helps to prevent mold from forming. This makes it a great preventative measure in making sure mold doesn't grow in your carpet, and that any fungus or bacteria is killed.

Where Can I Get These Ingredients?

You can pick up baking soda at any local grocery store - it's VERY inexpensive. Each box we bought cost about 50 cents. You can get your own lemongrass essential oil here at Africa Imports by clicking here.
