The Ankh Symbol - the Key of Life
05/11/2009 05:29
The ankh is a revered symbol in many parts of Africa. Literally it means "eternal life" or the key of life. The symbol is an Egyptian hieroglyphic character and was often used in Egyptian tomb paintings or other art, often at the fingertips of a god or goddess in images that represent the deities of the afterlife. The ankh was often carried by Egyptians as an amulet because it was believed to bring prosperity and fertility. One theory about the ankh is that it is symbolic of the sunrise, with the loop representing the Sun rising above the horizon, which is represented by the crossbar. The vertical section below the crossbar would then be the path of the sun. Whatever the case, the popularity of the ankh has spread from Egypt to all of Africa and can often be seen painted onto fabrics, garments, or worn as a pendant for its distinctive appearance and its believed power to bring prosperity.
