September 24th marks the annual celebration of Heritage Day in South Africa. On this public holiday, South Africans from all backgrounds are encouraged to celebrate their cultural heritage and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions.

The origins of Heritage Day come from Zulu history. The Zulu King, Shaka played an important role in uniting disparate Zulu clans into one cohesive nation. This year on Heritage Day the government decided to honour the contribution of all South Africans for the successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which became a proud part of the South African legacy. In celebration there will be parties, picnics, concerts and planned celebrations throughout the country.

Why not celebrate your heritage today in honor of heritage day? No matter what your nationality is today can be a day to find out more about your roots and where you came from, and to share that with your friends and family.
