    What is Shea Butter?

Shea butter is an off-white natural fat extracted from the nut of the African shea or Karite tree. The nuts are naturally high in Stearic acid and oleic acid which gives shea butter it's moisturizing and healing properties.

The nuts are cracked open and separated from the outer shell, then crushed and roasted over an open wood fire. The crushed nuts must be stirred constantly to keep them from burning. After roasting the nuts are ground to a paste and a little water added. Then the butter is transferred to large basins to be kneaded by hand to separate out the shea oils. The oils are collected in this curd state, then the water is boiled out of them and the butter left to cool and harden. Once the shea butter has cooled, it is checked for quality before being formed into balls and shipped to us in the U.S. Once the shea butter arrives here, it is double-checked to make sure it is in the best possible condition.
